Biomarkers
Malondialdehyde (MDA)
A widely used marker of oxidative stress.
A byproduct formed when free radicals damage fats in your cells.
Malondialdehyde is what’s left behind when free radicals attack the fats that make up your cell membranes — a process called lipid peroxidation. Because of that, MDA in urine serves as a practical, measurable indicator of oxidative stress: how well your body’s antioxidant defenses are keeping up.
What MDA is
Your body constantly produces free radicals — reactive molecules that are a normal byproduct of metabolism. Antioxidants keep them in check. When the balance tips toward the radicals, they damage cellular fats, and MDA is one of the most consistent end products of that damage. It’s among the most widely used markers of oxidative stress in research.
Why levels change
Smoking, poor sleep, intense or unaccustomed exercise, processed diets, alcohol, pollution, and psychological stress all push oxidative load up. Antioxidant-rich foods, quality sleep, and moderate regular activity push it down. MDA gives you a way to see that balance rather than assume it.
What a result can tell you
A urine MDA reading reflects your recent oxidative balance. Tracked over weeks, it can show whether lifestyle changes — quitting smoking, better sleep, a diet richer in vegetables — are actually shifting your baseline, which is more motivating than taking it on faith.
What it can’t tell you
Oxidative stress is a general state, not a disease — an elevated reading doesn’t diagnose any condition, and levels vary day to day. This is a wellness marker best used for trends. For any specific health concern, a healthcare provider is the right next step.
